Heralding Good News of Great Joy
From the Pastor’s heart

As 2008 began, Kathy and I braced ourselves for a tough year ahead. I spoke to our church staff and lay leaders about the proliferation of ministry needs during hard times. As the year progressed, I prepared for a sermon series on II Chronicles 7:13-15. God’s Word, “When I shut up the heavens so there is no rain,” became more than a word from the past, it became a living word for the day. As this year draws to a close, we need a word of hope.
I am not sure about the lifestyle of the Bethlehem shepherds the year our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ was born. My best guess is that it paled in comparison to what we enjoy today. On the other hand, they were employed and sheep were in demand. But when the angel appeared to them one night as they worked, his first words were “Do not be afraid.”
Fear is the norm today. Many fear unemployment or under-employment. Some fear foreclosure and bankruptcy. The economy has overshadowed two issues recently, but the fear of terrorism and the fear of prolonged drought are causing some hearts to race. There are those fears of life, which haunt many regardless of external worries, such as declining health and destructive relationships.
It is into our world of fear that God’s Word speaks today, “Do not be afraid, for I bring you good news of great joy.” The good news is Jesus. The great joy is forgiveness. Peace replaces fear. Hope replaces dread. Negative news is overcome by a positive presence. Immanuel – God is with us. Jesus – He will save his people from their sin. There is reason to rejoice. It is appropriate to celebrate. I hope you will join me in celebrating Christmas at First Baptist and sharing the good news with others through this season of hope.
As you trim your tree and trim your budget, don’t forget to stuff your ACTS 1:8 envelope with a generous gift to help First Baptist share God’s Word here in Cumming and around the world. God loves a cheerful giver and cheerful giving is good for the heart. As you navigate a busy holiday schedule, include regular stops for Worship. Rest, worship and praise will replenish the energy that responsibilities, obligations and commitments consume. As you receive presents from others and wrap gifts for others, remember to receive God’s forgiveness and to give others your witness.
It is an awesome privilege and joy to be your pastor. Thank you for being my partner in ministry. Do I believe 2009 will be more challenging than 2008 – yes! Do I believe the need for ministry will increase – of course! Do I believe God will walk with us each step and every day – absolutely! Let’s celebrate God’s love this month and covenant with each other to share God’s love throughout these challenging days. Merry Christmas!
Your Pastor and Friend,
Dr. Bob Jolly
